Last year, the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) released a statement criticising the current education system in the UK for being too focussed on testing, results and tables. The result of this, they claim, is that children are not learning the skills that are required of them by the world of work.

I recently spent a thoroughly enjoyable day, holding a workshop for Riverside Performing Arts' in-house Theatre Company to help develop their upcoming show based on the popular children’s book ‘Elmer’ (you may be familiar with the eponymous patchwork elephant), at Midlands Arts Centre.

It was my nephew’s 17th birthday this week, and this is the first year since he was born that an annual ritual remains unfulfilled.
The day after Sam was born, I laid him on a piece of paper, and drew round his fledgling form. Every year after that, either on or close to his birthday, we repeated this ceremony, needing a larger and larger piece of paper as he grew into the young man who is now old enough to try for a driving licence.
